The Horizon

(Motivation)

Have you ever been in a position to look over a horizon? Whether you were looking out of a window on the 50th floor of a building, or just on top of a small hill? If you can imagine - for a moment - looking into the horizon, especially in the morning, there are very thin layers of haze. And if you keep your eyes focusing further and further into the horizon, you vaguely see smaller and smaller details until pretty much your eyesight hits an imaginary curtain, perhaps where the sky meets the ground.

That point when your eyesight has reached the furthest it can decipher, is an interesting example of our goals.

Although we have an idea of what the horizon holds – various natural landscapes, architechtural designs, populations – it is not until we structure the details in our mind, when the horizon really comes to life for us. For instance, can you see your dream house out in the horizon? Does it sit on a mountainside? On a Lakeside? By the seashore? In a high rise building in the middle of an exciting and bustling city? Even though the horizon can be vast, can you see the intricate details that is held within it?

Now to our goals: What kind of goal do you see on your horizon? Is it close? Can you see it clearly? Does is not take you much effort to see the details of your goal? Or is it beyond the horizon? Practically unseen by the physical eye? Does it rely on your internal eyesight – meaning your mind – to really develop the details?

This difference in sight or unsight affects your motivation to reach that goal immensely! If you’ve ever worked a job where you get paid every week, or every 2 weeks or every month… You know that you are getting paid on a certain day (which is your horizon) and you can easily see that day, whether its on a calendar, or your computer, or on the news, or your social circle is reminding you. It is very apparent, which helps fuel your fire. And each day that passes is like you are getting closer to your horizon, which helps you along and makes you feel good. You remember the Monday AFTER you get paid? Your motivation and excitement may seem non-existent. “Another 2 weeks until I get paid – whats the point of living?” – hahahaha. But when that payday is right around the corner in a day or two, man, your excitement builds up like you’re a kid in a candy store. You know that there is NO stopping payday from arriving. I mean, it’s as sure as the sun will rise, you are getting paid. Unless for some reason payday doesn’t show up – and you skip from Thursday and go right into Monday again. But you know that’s not happening. After Thursday is Friday and there is no stopping that. And if that doesn’t happen somehow, then I think we have bigger problems to deal with here rather than just a paycheck. We are missing a day of the week!

But when that paycheck is not enough to satisfy your vision of the horizon, it may be a bit more difficult to press forward. It may be more difficult to be motivated by daily routines.

The key is to make that goal or that vision of your horizon as detailed as possible. And remind yourself of it as frequently as possible. Just as a passing day brings you closer to payday, you can make each accomplishment bring you closer to your goal, or a new detail in your horizon.

The details in your goal can make a significant difference in you reaching them. For even the greatest of marksman can be unsuccessful if they are unable to see their target.

Take Care and Good luck!
