Your Definition of a dad

This is where it should start every day. What is your definition of a Dad? Is it definitive or evolving? It's probably different for all of us, but one common factor is that we prioritize our kids in our thoughts, actions, and decisions.

Here's an example. Part of the definition of Dad (to me) is being the ultimate protector. Now, MY VERSION of the ultimate protector has more to do with the protecting of the mind. I really worry about what information is going into my Kid's brains. Now a days, there is an avalanche of B.S. just hovering over people and waiting to come crashing down on them, regardless of their age. And so for me, I try to stay aware of their informational resources. And though I cannot prevent everything they hear, I can be aware of it and address it in a way that I feel is appropriate.

Now... I have some friends who also agree with a Dad being the 'ultimate protector', however, they see it as more of a Physical Protector. And that's okay too, because we do have to be the Physical Protectors of our Kids as well. It's just a crazy, crazy world we live in and we would be quite foolish to ignore the type of real dangers that our children's can be exposed to.

What's your definition?

If you haven't done so recently, I encourage you to regularly put some time aside for yourself and just contemplate what your qualities of a Dad should be and see how you measure up to your own standards. This could take as little as 5 minutes and an important exercise of self-reflection. When you do this, try to avoid negative references. Such as: "Well, a Dad should definitely NOT impose their own preferences on the kids". It is unfortunate that we live in a primarily negative-thinking world, and following that thought process is quite common. But speaking in positive terms does so much more for your health than negative speak does. Check this article for further explanation. (or web search the terms "scientific studies of negative and positive talk"

Also, if you are able to actually WRITE down your list, this also helps brain health, as noted here.

And overall what is happening? Not only are you laying out a blueprint for you to guide you (albeit, you may make several changes along the way) but you are also contributing to your confidence, self esteem, and good looks. Okay, I added that last one in there.
