#Savethekids

I was so happy to have recently attend the #Savethekids function put on at the Salem Alliance Church. The building was so electric with such positive people and positive thoughts; and Collin Kartchner led an excellent presentation connecting kid's time on social media and internet and the affect on their mental health. This issue seems like it happened and escalated so quickly because of the boom of technology, that some parents couldn't keep up - including me! So, this was a conversation long overdue and very well put together.

When it comes to technology and our kids, I'm as alerted as anyone: On one hand, the internet is my most favoritist thing ever. The greatest encyclopedia. On the other hand, it's a gateway to junk; junk that our kids could do without for their whole life. I still use the internet frequently with them. but the key word there is "with them" - because I use it as family time. I enjoy looking up resources that attempt to show them the productive and inspirational part of the internet.

The presentation that Collin did really hit home with me in regards to my reasons (and the stats) on why I am strict on my kids internet use. This gathering reinstated in me that there are other parents that have that same concern, and make similar decisions. And that was a great feeling of support for me as a parent. And if we can continue doing that for the parents of our community, that will also make a difference. As Collin said during his speech, "...it should be #Savetheparents,.." because we need to support other Parents, so they do not feel alone during the hard times of parenthood.

2 years ago, I made a conscious effort to talk to youth about how they use their technology (and access to the internet. And one day, I was able to volunteer to speak to middle school classes about career and education, and I also integrated the pros and cons of technology. And how it can benefit them if used properly and effectively. This was my attempt at making a positive connection with the youth, and showing that there are people out there that want to help you succeed.

This #Savethekids event was perfect timing for me personally, and overall, a great contribution to the community of Salem. It brought many people together for a good cause and opened the door for future conversations and engagements. I truly appreciate all those who were able to bring this event to us. Our community is more positive because of it.
